Abstract

From November 26th, 1944 to May 27th, 1945 Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) Y-29 Asch was used by three American Fighter Groups and one American Bomber Group. The fighters and light bombers were manned by young pilots, aged between twenty and twenty-eight years old. The often less experienced pilots were thrown into battle to attack and bomb the assigned targets. Everywhere there were the dreaded German anti-aircraft guns and German fighters planes who were defending their territory. Several Allied pilots did not return to the ALG Y-29 Asch. Some were able to eject in time from their plane with their parachute, but as soon as they landed they were captured. Others were less fortunate and crashed with their planes. Of the 57 fallen Allied soldiers, attached to ALG Y-29 Asch, 27 died after their plane was hit by anti-aircraft guns (flak), 14 died during air battle, 11 crashed, 2 by bombings on the airbase, 2 died in an accident and 1 soldier died from an unknown cause. There were several other soldiers who were severely injured, some even maimed for the rest of their lives. This edition will commemorate all Allied soldiers who gave their lives for the freedom of Europe while they were attached to ALG Y-29 Asch.
